Introducing
Beta Client B997
You are invited to a sneak peek at our Beta Release!
FileOpen is preparing to release a new binary Client, i.e. a plug-in for Acrobat/Reader, for Windows. But before we do we’d like to invite you to test and confirm that it works properly with your FileOpen implementation.
There are two primary improvements to Client B997:
-
Support for dynamic watermarks containing non-ASCII characters. It is now possible to impose watermarks with CJK and other UTF-8 character sets. There are a few known issues with this functionality:
-
Kerning of strings containing a mix of CJK and ASCII characters may result in unequal spacing.
-
The maximum length of a CJK watermark string is half that of an ASCII string (because each character requires two bytes).
-
Only included fonts are supported for CJK characters and it may be necessary to install an Acrobat/Reader language-pack.
-
Right-to-left writing systems (Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew, etc.) are not yet supported.
-
-
Replacement of the screen-capture control mechanism. The dll-injection method that has been in the Client since build 883 has been replaced with one that works directly with OS functions. The new method is more efficient and less intrusive than the old and also more effective. There has been no change to the invocation procedure via the protocol, i.e. the presence of the capability is announced by the Client via ScreenHook=Yes in the DocPerm request and invocation is done by sending HookScreen=True in the DocPerm response.
If you are not implementing either of these features then this new release should not have any impact on your system, i.e. it should work in exactly the same way as the previous B996 Client. However you may want to confirm this buy installing and testing against some of your encrypted documents.
You can install the B997 Client from here:
If you would like to see the new features demonstrated please read on.
Below are two test PDFs that should open without any authentication for a Windows system running Client B997, but not open in any other environment. These PDFs each implement one of the new features.
RS & RM Interfaces.pdf
This PDF implements the screenshot blocking mechanism.
If you are able to open it you should not be able to capture the screen using tools native to or running on the same PC. The system does not prevent the use of external cameras and also does not prevent capture by a second machine connected by RDP (though this could be added if there is demand). Presenting the PDF to others via Zoom/Teams/Webex/etc. should not be possible.
RightsManagerDatasheet.pdf
This PDF will display a watermark with text in several non-ASCII writing systems.
Each page should contain a watermark that looks like this, though with different numerical values:

Note that you may need to install additional fonts in order to open the document. If so Acrobat/Reader should prompt you and send you here.
If you do not see this watermark or it does not resemble this image then we’d like to investigate.
Likewise if you encounter any other issues with this Client or questions please send an email to support@fileopen.com
